Go do whatever you need to for the next few months right now. You might not get much done once the eaglets hatch.

Last year, more than 200,000 people from about 180 countries watched eagle parents hatch three eggs, brave bad weather, raise their chicks and teach them to fly in Decorah, Iowa. The eagle cam, Wired Science’s most popular post of 2011, created our very own online community of eaglophiles. So many people tuned in, the traffic crashed our website more than once. But this year, we’re ready!

And now, the eagles are back. The mom’s about to lay her eggs any day now.

Bald eagles live up to 28 years and may mate for life. For years, their populations were ravaged by the pesticide DDT, which accumulated in the fish they ate. Since the chemical was restricted in 1972, they’ve bounced back. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed them from the federal list of threatened and endangered species in 2007.

The Raptor Resource Project runs 12 webcams, including the Decorah eagle cam. The organization, established in 1988, takes care of more than 40 raptor nests and nest sites. The project has used birdcams since 1998, when it launched the web’s first, a peregrine falcon cam known as Mae’s Internest in Oak Park Heights, Minnesota. The project also has birdcams of falcons, ospreys, hawks and owls.

“By giving ordinary people intimate access to the lives of wild animals, our work deepens the connection between people and the natural world,” the Raptor Resource Project website reads.

Scientists also have been tracking D1, one of last year’s babies, through a satellite transmitter, which allows them to keep tabs on her travels.

Video: Raptor Resource Project/Ustream.

Homepage photo: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service/WikimediaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7653157038282170244.post-75262888422870472762012-03-11T19:56:55.959-04:002012-03-11T19:56:55.959-04:00They spread like crazy! They spread like crazy!jeanlivingsimplehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08820800238853344959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7653157038282170244.post-57891639126473048262012-03-11T19:56:08.996-04:002012-03-11T19:56:08.996-04:00Thanks for visiting Granny.
