Why Birds Pant Like A Dog

Birds will pant like a dog since they don't have sweat glands. This is just one way they keep cool when the temperatures rise. Here are a few recent pictures of a panting American Robin cooling off in my bird bath.  It may look as if the bird is singing but he/she wasn't making a sound.

A few other ways birds keep cool is (of course) take a bath, seek a heavily shaded area, and puffing up their feathers which allows air to circulate to catch a breeze or will hold their wings out to cool themselves. Check out this good article written by Melissa Mayntz to learn more about How Do Wild Birds Keep Cool In Summer .  She also includes tips on how we backyard birders can help our feathered friends keep their cool during the heat of the Summer.

Wishing Y'all Peace, Love, Health, and Wealth!
